8 Practices to Avoid in Growing your Brand

Personal branding has come a long way with the development of Web 2.0. If in the past, marketers relied mainly on publishing materials and public speaking to bring their brands to the consciousness of the public, now there are many ways in which you can make your brand more visible in the webpages. It’s easy, but when done wrong, you’ll have all your efforts put to waste. Simply put, personal branding has been shaped into a seemingly easy yet totally tricky activity.

With that said, personal branding should always be a well-thought out strategy that can not only bring you to your desired end but also make you fulfilled as a professional. If you set out to introduce your identity to the public, you show the real you. The same goes with personal branding. It’s a game where authenticity is necessary. Building your brand will only happen if you have fully understood three important factors – yourself, your goal, and your edge over your competition.

Stop creating a picture of who you’re not. Be your best self. Always.

2. Acting

Think! Think carefully of a game plan – “How do you want to communicate with your target audience?” “How do you want to be perceived by your target audience?” You may think that having Twitter, Facebook, and blogs can increase your visibility, but you should know that your visibility in social networks is not the only thing that can help with building your brand.

Personal branding demands you to think before you act. Which area of thought leadership do you follow? What kind of personality do you project? How do you want to show that personality? How can you link that personality with the communications that you do in your company? Once you get an answer, you’re sure of nailing it down.

3. Focusing on quantity

Go for quality! You might have posted numerous blog comments or tweeted several times in an hour only to assure yourself of more visibility. That may help. It’s not just right, though. Your target audience might be turned off if you overdo this. Nothing can actually beat having knockout and high-quality content or tweets that can be beneficial to your community of followers. Develop content that you believe is valuable to your clientele, not a stale one. Remember, it’s your ticket to the consciousness of your audience.

4. Being seen everywhere

Focus! To build up your brand doesn’t mean you have to bring it to fame. Selective fame, maybe. Not everyone has to know you – focus on those who can help you reach your end goals. Know your target audience and discover where they are. Doing this will save you from exhausting yourself by trying to be everywhere.

Steady! No matter how attractive social media is, don’t jump into it without a careful game plan ready. Many online marketers have shifted from one social media to another and ended up not getting what they have expected. Don’t shift from one social network to another simply because it’s popular at the moment. That will only keep you out of focus. Choose one instead, and commit to it.

This way, you’re not only making a presence where you physically are; you’re also expanding your reach by being visible on the Web.

7. Do-it-yourself

Use the right, if not the best, material. If you think your customers would watch not-so-good videos of your company, you’re wrong. Making it perfect can tell your audience how professional and serious you are to your brand. Getting the approval of your target audience is what you need; start by giving them the best – one that’s produced out of your effort and investment. At the end of the day, it will pay off. After all, why should you worry about the cost if it’s for the buildup of your brand?

8. Implementing

Evaluate! Acting as we mentioned earlier is not right. It should be done with careful planning and a good deal of evaluation after. Don’t spend your time implementing your plans without knowing how it can help you get your desired results. Think of an evaluation scheme to see whether what you have strategized goes as planned or not. If it does, keep it up; if not, update it or change it.

Avoiding these eight practices can keep you on the right track in establishing your brand and increasing your following. It may take some time before you can establish your brand fully, but if you do it right by following the above-mentioned strategies, you may build up a name for your company in less time than expected.
